The Cromwell Radio Yacht Squadron hosted the DF95 Otago Championships on Friday and Saturday, and the event went off without a hitch. Competitors praised the venue, organization, and warm Cromwell hospitality.
Local sailor Jamie White claimed the gold medal with a commanding lead, followed by Brett McCormack from Dunedin in second place and Cromwell’s Darryl Pender in third.
Sailors faced a full range of conditions—from flat calm to 25-knot gusts—making for exciting and at times challenging racing.
The weekend concluded with a relaxed barbecue, raffle draws, and prize-giving, rounding off a fantastic event.
Many locals came down to watch, some for the first time, having never seen these little yachts racing before. There was plenty of interest and curiosity, with a few saying they’ll be back to have a go themselves at one of our Tuesday evening club sails.
Special thanks go to Race Officer Peter Henderson from Invercargill, who generously volunteered his time, and to all the club members for their great teamwork and organisation.
